IELTS Speaking: STEM Education

This practice set covers all three parts of the IELTS Speaking test, focusing on STEM education.

Part 1 lasts 4-5 minutes, Part 2 takes 3-4 minutes, and Part 3 runs for 4-5 minutes.

You can use this set to familiarize yourself with the test format and practice your English speaking skills.

Part 1: Interview-style Questions (4-5 minutes)

  1. Did you enjoy science classes when you were in school?
  2. What was your favorite science subject?
  3. Do you think mathematics is important in daily life?
  4. Have you ever participated in a science fair or competition?
  5. Are there any famous scientists or inventors from your country?
  6. How often do you use technology in your daily life?
  7. Do you think children today are more interested in technology than when you were young?
  8. What do you think is the most important technological invention of the last century?

Note: The examiner may ask follow-up questions based on your responses.

Part 2: Individual Long Turn (3-4 minutes)

You will have 1 minute to prepare your response, then speak for 1-2 minutes on the following topic:

Describe a memorable science experiment you conducted or witnessed.

You should say:

  • What the experiment was about
  • Where and when it took place
  • Who was involved in the experiment
  • Why it was memorable for you

Part 3: Two-way Discussion (4-5 minutes)

  1. How has the emphasis on STEM education changed in recent years?
  2. What are the potential drawbacks of focusing too heavily on STEM subjects in schools?
  3. Do you think there’s a gender imbalance in STEM fields? If so, why might this be?
  4. How can we make STEM subjects more engaging for students who struggle with them?
  5. What role should governments play in promoting STEM education?
  6. How might advancements in STEM fields impact job markets in the future?
  7. Do you think it’s important for all students to have a basic understanding of coding and computer science? Why or why not?

Evaluation Criteria

  • Fluency and Coherence
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy
  • Pronunciation
