WRITING TASK 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
Some people believe that children’s behavior is primarily shaped by their parents and family environment, while others argue that factors outside the home, such as peers, media, and educational institutions, have a greater influence on how children develop.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Body Paragraph 1 (100-110 words)
Topic: Arguments supporting the view that family environment is the primary influence
Mind Map Ideas:
- Early childhood development: Parents are the first teachers; foundational years (0-5) spent primarily at home
- Value transmission: Moral values, ethics, cultural identity learned from parents
- Emotional security: Attachment theory—secure home base affects confidence and social behavior
- Example: Children from stable, supportive families often exhibit better self-regulation and empathy
- Modeling behavior: Children imitate parents’ conflict resolution, communication styles, work ethic
Body Paragraph 2 (100-110 words)
Topic: Arguments supporting the view that external factors have greater influence
Mind Map Ideas:
- Peer pressure: Adolescents particularly influenced by friends; desire for social acceptance
- Media exposure: Screen time, social media, influencers shape values, aspirations, behavior patterns
- Educational institutions: Teachers, school culture, extracurricular activities broaden perspectives
- Example: Teenagers may adopt fashion, language, attitudes from peer groups that differ from family values
- Socialization beyond home: Children spend significant time (6-8 hours daily) in school environments
Body Paragraph 3 (Optional but recommended for balanced discussion) (60-80 words)
Topic: Your personal opinion with synthesis
Mind Map Ideas:
- Interactive effect: Both factors work together; not either/or situation
- Foundation vs. reinforcement: Family provides foundation; external factors build upon or challenge it
- Resilience factor: Strong family base helps children navigate negative external influences
- Personal stance: While external factors matter, family’s early and consistent influence is more fundamental
- Supporting reasoning: Parents have longer-term relationship, emotional bonds stronger than peer connections
