How the IELTS Overall Band Score Is Calculated
Your IELTS Overall Band Score is the average of your four skill scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Listening and Reading are marked out of 40 raw points and converted to a band score; Writing and Speaking are assessed directly in whole or half bands by examiners. This IELTS score calculator applies the official rounding method to the average:

The Listening raw-score-to-band conversion is the same for Academic and General Training. The Reading conversion is different for each version, which is why this calculator asks you to select your test type before converting your Reading score.

Frequently Asked Questions About IELTS Scoring
How is my IELTS Overall Band Score calculated?
It’s the average of your Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking band scores, rounded to the nearest half band. If the average ends in .25 it rounds up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75 it rounds up to the next whole band.
What’s the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training scoring?
Both use the same 0–9 band scale and the same Overall Band Score formula. Listening and Speaking are identical for both versions, but Reading and Writing tasks differ, and the Reading raw-score-to-band conversion is different for Academic versus General Training.
What is a good IELTS score?
It depends on your goal. Many universities ask for Band 6.5–7 for admission, some skilled migration programs require Band 6–7 in each skill, and Band 8–9 is considered very good to expert level proficiency.
Does IELTS round scores up or down?
IELTS never rounds down. Scores round up to the next half band at the .25 mark and up to the next whole band at the .75 mark; other averages round to the nearest half band.
How accurate is the raw-score-to-band conversion?
It’s a close approximation, not an official fixed table. IELTS adjusts the exact conversion slightly for each test administration to keep difficulty consistent, so your real result may differ by half a band from this estimate.
