You’ve got 60 minutes to answer 40 questions based on three passages.
With the right approach, you can do it.
The strategy I’m about to share is called the “20-20-20 method.” Here’s how it works:
- Divide your time equally among the three passages – 20 minutes for each.
- For each passage, spend about 3-4 minutes skimming the text and questions.
- Use the remaining 16-17 minutes to read in detail and answer the questions.
A detailed example#
Imagine you’ve just started your Reading test.
The first passage is about the history of coffee.
Here’s how you could approach it:
Minute 0-3: Quickly skim the passage. Look at headings, first and last sentences of paragraphs, and any bold or italicized words. This gives you a general idea of the content.
Minute 3-4: Glance over the questions. Identify question types (multiple choice, fill in the blanks, etc.) and key words.
Minute 4-20: Start answering questions. Read relevant parts of the text in detail as needed. If you get stuck on a question, mark it and move on. You can come back to it if you have time at the end.
At the 20-minute mark, move on to the second passage, even if you haven’t finished all questions from the first. Repeat the process for the second and third passages.
This method helps in two ways:
- It ensures you at least look at all three passages, rather than running out of time before reaching the last one.
- It helps you pace yourself as time ticks away.
One last tip: If you finish a passage before the 20 minutes are up, you can use that extra time on another passage. But try to stick to the overall structure to keep yourself on track.
