Why This Works#
Examiners may penalize awkward silences and “um, er” sounds heavily in the fluency criteria. Bridge phrases give you 2-3 seconds of thinking time while keeping your speech flowing naturally.
How to Apply the Technique#
Step 1: You can memorize 5 bridge phrases that feel natural to you. Examples: “That’s an interesting question,” “Well, from my perspective,” “I’d say that…”
Step 2: When you need thinking time, start with a bridge phrase immediately. This buys you precious seconds while sounding confident.
Step 3: You can use the thinking time to organize your main point, then continue speaking smoothly.
When to Use This Technique#
You may want to use bridge phrases in Part 1 when questions catch you off-guard and in Part 3 during complex analytical questions. They’re most valuable when transitioning between ideas or when the examiner asks unexpected follow-up questions.
Practice Steps#
Daily drill: You should record yourself answering random questions, forcing yourself to use one bridge phrase per response. Weekly challenge: Practice with a timer – use bridge phrases to eliminate all silences longer than 2 seconds.
Master 5 phrases this week, and your fluency score will noticeably improve in your next practice session.
