The Time Travel Tactic in Speaking Part 2

Last Updated on

Let’s explore the Time Travel Tactic. This approach is all about looking at your topic from different time perspectives – past, present, and future. It’s like taking a journey through time with your words!

So, how can you use this Time Travel Tactic in your IELTS Speaking Part 2? Here’s a simple way to put it into action:

When you get your topic card, think about how it relates to the past, present, and future. You might consider how things were before, how they are now, and how they might change.

As you plan your answer, try to include at least one point for each time perspective. This gives your response a natural structure and flow.

When you start speaking, move through these time perspectives to create a rich, well-rounded answer. This not only helps you speak for longer but also shows off your ability to use different tenses.

Let’s look at how this might work with five different Speaking Part 2 topics:

Describe a place you enjoy visiting

Past: “I first discovered this park when I was a child. It used to have an old wooden playground that I loved.”

Present: “Now, the park has been renovated with modern equipment and beautiful gardens. I still go there every weekend to relax.”

Future: “I hope this park will always be here, and maybe one day I’ll bring my own children to enjoy it too.”

Talk about a skill you want to learn

Past: “I’ve always been interested in languages, but never had the chance to learn Spanish before.”

Present: “I’m currently looking for Spanish classes in my area and have started using a language learning app.”

Future: “In a year’s time, I hope to be able to have basic conversations in Spanish, and maybe even plan a trip to Spain!”

Describe an important event in your life

Past: “My high school graduation was a significant moment. I remember feeling both excited and nervous about the future.”

Present: “Looking back now, I realize how much that day shaped my path. It motivated me to pursue higher education.” Future: “I’m looking forward to my university graduation next year, which will be another important milestone in my life.”

Talk about a person who has influenced you

Past: “My grandfather was a huge influence on me growing up. He always encouraged me to read and learn new things.” Present: “Even though he’s no longer with us, I often think about his advice when I face challenges.”

Future: “I hope to pass on his wisdom and love for learning to my own children or students one day.”

Describe a tradition in your country

Past: “This festival has been celebrated in my country for hundreds of years. It started as a harvest celebration.” Present: “Today, it’s still an important part of our culture. Families come together to share special meals and exchange gifts.”

Future: “I think this tradition will continue to evolve. Maybe we’ll see more modern elements added while keeping the core meaning.”

By using the Time Travel Tactic, you’re not just answering the question – you’re taking the examiner on a journey through time. It’s like giving them a 3D view of your topic!

Remember, you don’t need to spend equal time on past, present, and future for every topic. The key is to use this structure to help you create a fuller, more interesting response. With practice, you’ll find it becomes easier to think about topics from these different time perspectives. By the time, you can also try other strategies in IELTS Speaking Part 2: 5 Senses and Personal Anecdote.

This Time Travel Tactic can really transform your IELTS Speaking Part 2 performance. It can help you speak more fluently, showcase your ability to use different tenses, and provide a well-structured answer.

I’m really curious to hear about your experiences with IELTS Speaking Part 2.
