IELTS Writing Task 2: Internet of Things

Last Updated on

This is a practice question for IELTS Writing Task 2. Give yourself a strict 40-minute time limit to plan, write, and check your response, and aim to write at least 250 words. Treat this as you would the real exam — no dictionaries, no extra time — so that your practice accurately reflects your exam-day performance.

Task Prompt

Write about the following topic:

The Internet of Things (IoT) — the network of everyday devices connected to the internet, from home appliances to wearable gadgets — is becoming an increasingly common part of daily life.

Some people believe that this growing connectivity brings mainly positive changes to the way we live. Others believe it creates more problems than it solves.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Sample Answer Outline

Below is a suggested structure for a high-scoring response to this “discuss both views and give your opinion” question, along with mind-map ideas for each body paragraph.

Introduction

  • Paraphrase the topic (connected devices becoming part of daily routines).
  • State that there are differing opinions on whether this is beneficial.
  • Give a clear thesis: briefly state your own opinion (e.g., that while there are risks, the benefits generally outweigh them — or vice versa).

Body Paragraph 1 — View One: IoT brings mainly positive changes
Mind map ideas:

  • Convenience → smart devices automate routine tasks (thermostats, lighting, appliances)
  • Efficiency and cost savings → reduced energy consumption, optimized resource use
  • Health monitoring → wearables track vital signs, alert users/doctors to problems early
  • Example: a smart fitness tracker detecting an irregular heartbeat and prompting a medical check-up

Body Paragraph 2 — View Two: IoT creates more problems than it solves
Mind map ideas:

  • Privacy concerns → constant data collection by companies
  • Security risks → hackable devices, vulnerability to cyberattacks
  • Over-reliance on technology → reduced independence, skills atrophy
  • Example: a hacked home security camera compromising a family’s privacy

Body Paragraph 3 — Your Own Opinion
Mind map ideas:

  • State your position clearly (agree more with one view, or a balanced middle-ground stance)
  • Justify with a synthesizing reason (e.g., “with proper regulation and security standards, benefits can be maximized while risks are minimized”)
  • Optional: brief real-world example supporting your stance

Conclusion

  • Summarize both views briefly.
  • Restate your opinion clearly.
  • End with a forward-looking or reflective closing thought.
