In the past, most people spent their whole lives close to the place where they grew up, surrounded by their extended family. Today, it is increasingly common for adults to live hundreds or even thousands of kilometres from their relatives. This trend is driven mainly by work and education, but there are practical ways for families to stay close.
The main reason people move away is opportunity. Universities and well-paid jobs tend to be concentrated in large cities or in other countries, so young people often have to leave home to study or build a career. Globalisation has accelerated this, as companies now recruit internationally and many professionals move abroad for work. In addition, the high cost of housing in some areas forces people to live wherever they can afford, which may be far from their parents. For many, moving away is therefore not a choice but a necessity.
Fortunately, distance does not have to weaken family relationships. The most important step is regular contact. Video calls make it possible to see relatives every week, and a fixed time, such as a call every Sunday, can turn contact into a routine rather than something that depends on remembering. Families can also make the most of visits by planning longer stays during holidays and celebrating important occasions together whenever possible. Small shared activities help too, for example a family group chat or watching the same series and discussing it. Finally, employers could support this by offering flexible or remote working, which would allow people to spend extended periods near their families.
In conclusion, people live further from their families mainly because of work, study and housing costs. However, with regular contact, well-planned visits and more flexible working, families can remain close despite the distance.
