IELTS Writing Task 2 Practice Question: Tourism

Tourism has grown rapidly in many countries, and its effect on local cultures is widely debated. Some believe it has damaged traditions and local ways of life, while others argue it helps preserve cultural heritage and promotes exchange between cultures. In my view, tourism can do both, but when well managed, its positive effects are greater.

Those who see tourism negatively point to the commercialisation of culture. Traditional ceremonies may be shortened or changed to entertain visitors, and handicrafts are sometimes replaced by cheap, mass-produced souvenirs. In popular destinations, rising property prices can push local residents out of historic neighbourhoods, which become filled with hotels and souvenir shops. Over time, the authentic daily life that once attracted visitors can disappear.

On the other hand, tourism can provide the money and motivation to protect cultural heritage. Entrance fees and tourist taxes fund the restoration of temples, castles and museums that governments might otherwise neglect. When visitors are interested in traditional music, dance or crafts, young people have an economic reason to learn these skills, keeping them alive. Tourism also encourages cultural exchange, as travellers learn about local customs and hosts learn about the wider world.

In my opinion, the outcome depends largely on management. Limiting visitor numbers at sensitive sites, involving local communities in tourism decisions and ensuring that profits remain with local businesses can maximise the benefits while reducing harm.

In conclusion, tourism can threaten local cultures through commercialisation and overcrowding, but with careful management, it is more likely to help preserve heritage and promote cultural understanding.
