Some people believe that sustainable urban development should focus primarily on reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy. Others argue that sustainable cities should prioritize green spaces and biodiversity.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with each of these views?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Sample answer outline#

  1. Introduction: Present the topic and state your position
  2. Body paragraph 1: You should discuss the view on reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy
  3. Body paragraph 2: You should discuss the view on prioritizing green spaces and biodiversity
  4. Body paragraph 3: You can present your opinion and explain the extent of your agreement with each view
  5. Conclusion: Summarize your position and main points

As cities grow, there is debate about what sustainable urban development should prioritise. Some believe the focus should be on cutting carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy, while others argue that green spaces and biodiversity matter most. I partly agree with both views, but I believe reducing emissions should be the main priority, with green spaces as an essential complement.

I agree with the first view because cities are responsible for the majority of global energy use and carbon emissions. Transport, heating and electricity in urban areas are central to the climate crisis, so measures such as expanding public transport, insulating buildings and installing solar panels can achieve large reductions. Without these changes, even the greenest city would still contribute heavily to global warming, which threatens urban areas through heatwaves and flooding.

However, I also agree that green spaces and biodiversity are vital. Parks, street trees and green roofs cool cities during heatwaves, absorb rainwater, improve air quality and support wildlife. They also have major benefits for residents’ physical and mental health. A city that reduces emissions but consists only of concrete would not be a pleasant or resilient place to live.

The two priorities frequently support each other. Trees and green roofs reduce the energy needed for cooling, and cycle routes through parks encourage low-carbon travel. Therefore, urban planners should treat them as complementary rather than competing goals, while ensuring emissions targets are met.

In conclusion, I agree with both views to some extent, but because climate change is the greatest threat to cities, cutting emissions should come first, with green spaces and biodiversity integrated into every sustainable development plan.

Task Response

The question asks about “each of these views”, and the essay evaluates both separately before giving an overall position.

Coherence & Cohesion

Logical structure: agreement with view 1, agreement with view 2, then how they connect; signposting is clear.

Lexical Resource

Urban vocabulary: insulating, green roofs, resilient, complementary rather than competing, emissions targets.

Grammatical Range

Conditionals, relative clauses and passive forms used flexibly and accurately.
