Let’s talk about the “time frame” approach in writing task 1.
This method helps you pick the right tense based on when the data in your graph or chart is from.
Here’s how it works:
1. Look at the dates or time periods in your graph or chart.
2. Decide if the data is about the past, present, or future.
3. Choose your tense accordingly.
Some examples
Example 1: You’ve got a graph showing coffee consumption from 2000 to 2020.
Time frame: All in the past Tense to use: Past simple “Coffee consumption increased steadily from 2000 to 2020.”
Example 2: Your chart shows predicted population growth from 2025 to 2050.
Time frame: All in the future Tense to use: Future with ‘will’ or ‘is expected to’ “The population is expected to grow rapidly between 2025 and 2050.”
Example 3: You have a graph showing internet usage from 1995 to 2025 (current year is 2024).
Time frame: Past and future Tense to use: Past simple for past data, present perfect for up to now, future for predictions “Internet usage rose sharply from 1995 to 2010. It has continued to increase up to the present day and is predicted to grow further until 2025.”
A few extra strategy to remember:
For general trends, you can use the present simple: “The graph shows that coffee consumption increases in winter.”
If you’re not sure about future predictions, you can use ‘is expected to’ or ‘is projected to’.
Don’t forget to use some present tenses to describe the graph itself: “The chart illustrates…”
You might want to look at some graphs or charts in newspapers or online and try describing them using the right tenses.
