With the world’s population expected to approach ten billion by the middle of this century, the question of how to produce enough food has become urgent. Some argue that modern agricultural technologies are essential, while others believe traditional farming is more sustainable. In my opinion, the best solution combines the strengths of both.

Supporters of modern agriculture point to its remarkable productivity. Fertilisers, improved seed varieties, irrigation systems and machinery have dramatically increased crop yields over the last century, helping to reduce famine in many regions. Newer technologies, such as precision farming that uses sensors and satellite data, allow farmers to apply exactly the amount of water and fertiliser each field needs. Without these advances, feeding growing cities would be extremely difficult.

On the other hand, industrial farming has caused serious environmental problems. Heavy use of chemicals pollutes rivers and harms pollinators, monoculture farming reduces biodiversity, and intensive ploughing degrades soil over time. Traditional methods, including crop rotation, mixed farming and natural pest control, tend to protect soil health and local ecosystems, and they have sustained communities for centuries.

I believe that rejecting either approach would be a mistake. Traditional knowledge can guide how land is managed, while modern technology can make those practices more efficient. For instance, farmers can rotate crops and maintain hedgerows while using data and precision tools to reduce waste.

In conclusion, modern technology is necessary to feed a growing population, but it must be applied in ways informed by traditional, sustainable practices if farming is to remain productive in the long term.
