This is a practice question for IELTS Writing Task 1 (General Training).

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task and write at least 150 words.

General Training Task 1

You are planning to attend a friend’s wedding in another city.

Write a letter to your employer requesting time off work. In your letter:

  • Explain the reason for your request
  • Provide details about the dates you need off
  • Suggest how your work responsibilities will be managed during your absence

Task Instructions

  • You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
  • Write at least 150 words.
  • Do NOT write any addresses.
  • Begin your letter as follows: Dear Mr. Thompson,

Sample Answer Outline

  1. Introduction: State the purpose of the letter
  2. Body Paragraph 1: You can explain the reason for the time off request
  3. Body Paragraph 2: Provide specific dates and duration of absence
  4. Body Paragraph 3: You should suggest how work responsibilities will be managed
  5. Conclusion: Express gratitude and offer to discuss further if needed
