In the past, grandparents often lived with or near their grandchildren and played a central role in raising them. Today, in many societies, this role has diminished. Some see this as harmful to families and communities, while others believe it reflects positive social change. In my view, the trend has some benefits, but on balance it represents a significant loss.
Those who view the change positively argue that it reflects greater independence and choice. Parents can raise children according to their own values without interference, and older people today often have active lives of their own, travelling, working or pursuing hobbies rather than spending their retirement on childcare. Professional childcare and early education can also provide structured learning and social contact with other children.
However, the reduced involvement of grandparents has real costs. Grandparents pass on family history, traditions and practical skills, giving children a sense of identity and continuity. They also offer emotional support and an additional trusted adult, which can be particularly valuable when parents are under pressure. Families benefit financially as well, since childcare from relatives is free and flexible. At the community level, weaker links between generations can increase loneliness among older people and reduce mutual understanding between young and old.
In my opinion, the ideal situation is one in which grandparents remain involved by choice rather than obligation. Even when families live apart, regular visits and video calls can maintain strong relationships.
In conclusion, although the declining role of grandparents partly reflects positive changes in independence and lifestyle, the loss of intergenerational connection is significant, so families should actively find ways to keep grandparents involved.
